Introducing the New Duropoint Anchor Hook - Out Now!

Introducing the New Duropoint Anchor Hook - Out Now!

After nine months design, tweaking and manufacture they’ve finally touched down at Angling Iron HQ, and boy are we pleased with them! Already responsible for landing some truly impressive carp to nearly 70lbs during it's testing phase, the new Duropoint® Anchor is set to become a firm favourite for many. Manufactured to our own design & spec with the extremely well regarded Japanese XC70 high carbon steel, they’re a heavily forged, strong and mind blowingly sharp hook that feature an aggressively in turned eye and fractionally inward facing point. These attributes combine to make a pattern that flips and takes hold in an instant, giving incredibly secure and reliable hookholds. Thus the name 'Anchor' As with the rest of the Duropoint® range an incredibly precise tempering process ensures a hook point that is both exceptionally sharp and highly durable. Finished with an incredibly tough and corrosion resistant PTFE nano coating, This superior finish serves not only to protect the points from degradation and oxidation but also actually improves hook penetration through a reduction in friction too. Designed with softer hooklink materials in mind, this is a supreme bottom bait pattern that will suit, simple hair, blowback, Combi rigs and the like. It will also find favour with those who like to use a hook with an inturned eye for their Multi and Ronnie rigs too! Available initially in the very popular Size 5 with Size 4’s due for production in around two months time and size 6’s thereafter A fantastic addition to our range - The Duropoint® Anchor
The Multi Rig - Carp rigs by Angling Iron

The Multi Rig - Carp rigs by Angling Iron

A creation of Mr Mike Kavanagh, The Multi rig is a superbly effective and versatile rig. Not only is it a fantastic carp catcher but its also incredibly simple to tie, essentially it consists of a length of coated braid with an overhand loop of around an inch to an inch and a half tied at the hook end, the coating of the braid is then stripped back slightly behind the knot. This enables to last inch or so to rotate freely as a carp sucks at the bait.   These days many anglers opt to change their rig after landing a fish or two. Rather than having to change the entire rig over the multi rig enables the angler to change just the hook, and quickly too. An added benefit of this is that the hookbait can be changed equally as easily, this is a fantastic feature of the rig and makes it one of the best. Replacing the Hook and or Hookbait easily after landing fish or if the point becomes damaged is a real benefit offered by the Multi Rig. Changing the Hook and hookbait is painless, simply pull the Duropoint Chod hook towards the Knot and begin to ease the Loop off the hook. It's much simpler to do in practice than to explain in words and takes a matter of seconds. With the loop now released from the shank of the Chod hook simply replace your hookbait and Hook if you deem it necessary. Hook changed and a different hookbait too, now its just a case of popping the loop back over the hookpoint and back into position along the shank. Pull the loop back throught the eye of the hook until its around half way along the shank and in literally no time at all its ready to cast back out infront of those hungry Carp. Side note: Many worry that the "D" will close up on the cast. On the whole this is not the case, if the "D" is closed when reeling in it's often occurred as the rig gets dragged back through weed etc. However for piece of mind just use a little piece of our Trans Khaki shrink tube over the eye of the hook, This will trap the line so you needn't worry anymore. The shrink tube will pop off easily enough for the rig to retain its ability to have the hook and hookbait changed easily. At this point I think its worth mentioning that many anglers use the Multi rig with popups and popups alone, this is great and it works fantastically well as a popup rig but what a lot don't do is use it with bottom baits and that's a shame because it is equally as effective a hooker with a wafter or boilie straight out of the bag. To Optimise the rig for use with a bottom bait simply pull more of the loop throught the eye of the hook so that the "D" section extends further along the shank.   If you want to see a detailed guide on how to tie the Multi rig from the beginning then click here

The Ronnie Rig / Spinner Rig - Carp rigs by Angling Iron

The Ronnie rig or Spinner rig as it is otherwise knownJust who Ronnie is we're not sure, One thing we do know is the Ronnie or Spinner Rig as it is also known, Is a superbly effective rig for Big carp. When blatant high pop up rigs like the Hinged stiff rig or Chod rig just won't do and a popup rig presented much lower is required the Ronnie Rig really comes into its own. Similar to the well known big fish catcher the 360 Rig in both principle and Mechanics the Ronnie rig comes with none of the apparent risks to fish safety. Best used over relatively clean lakebeds this Big carp rig is ideal where a bit more subtlety is required. Quick and easy to tie it is better suited to use with a larger hook, Our Duropoint Curve shank in either a Size 4 or 6 is ideal. The beauty of these is that unlike other Curve shank hooks on the maket the gape is not restricted by an inturned eye. What else do you need; A pack of our Size 11 Quick Change Heli swivels, a pack of our Round rig ring screws or Micro hook ring swivels (on which to mount the bait) A pack of Our Blend Shank stops and Some of our Translucent Khaki Super Shrink tube in 3:1mm Size. Sitting pretty: The Ronnie rig sits poised ready for a bite, a Size 4 Duropoint Curve shank hook balances a 14mm popup perfectly with Little or no Rig putty required.   Want to see how to tie the Ronnie rig then CLICK HERE   Get all your Ronnie rig components, including our wickedly sharp Duropoint Curve shank hooks in one convenient kit by clicking here.

Time to get Ziggy with our 'STICKUMUP' zig range

Time to get Ziggy with our 'STICKUMUP' zig range

With a heatwave now well and truly underway, there is no better time to be getting the Zig rigs out again. During a prolonged spell of high pressure Carp tend to spend more time high up in the water column than they do near the bottom. This becomes a particularly important point to bear in mind if you're fishing on limited time.   Location of carp can become somewhat less difficult in conditions like these as they can become lethargic often with their backs showing but positioning your Zig hookbaits at the right depth becomes key. Along with Floater fishing Zigs really do come into their own at times like these. Angling Iron Have a couple of great new Zig fishing products to help you put more carp on the bank, Our eagerly anticipated 'STICKUMUP' Zig Balls and Zig Sticks are the perfect products for making fantastic Zig rigs, Zig Bugs and plenty more uses too, Couple them with our ridiculously sharp Size 8 Duropoint Chod hooks and you're sure to put extra fish on the bank. You can check our new Zig fishing tackle out in the artificials section.
Helicopter hero - find out what is needed and why its so versatile.

Helicopter hero - find out what is needed and why its so versatile.

The Helicopter setup, also known as a rotary rig is considered a great setup for fishing at range, when used correctly it almost never tangles and unlike lead clip arrangements is easily adjusted to allow for fishing over silt or light weed. Find out what components are needed to make up this excellent setup below. The above image shows the basic setup of the helicopter rig (also known as a rotary rig). Working backwards the Lead is easily attatched via one of our Speed links to the mainline or leader, This is covered by one of our Blend Helicopter buffer beads.  The great thing about our Helicopter buffer beads is that they are easily cut down, this means they can be used with leads that have the swivel or have had the swivel removed. Next up is the rig, in this case a variant of the hinged stiff rig. The rig is attached by a large loop to the small end of one of our Size 11 Flexi ring swivels which is mounted to the leader/mainline by the large ring. Finally comes one of our Blend 4mm tapered bore beads which is lightly pushed onto a medium sized Tungsten sinker of which there are many available. this sinker/bead arrangement can be slid up and down the leader/mainline which means it can easily be adjusted for varying lake bed conditions. In principle if fishing over a clear lakebed i.e Gravel then the sinker/bead can be slid nearer to the lead. For fishing over light Silkweed or light silt the sinker/bead can be slid a few inches away from the lead, this allows to lead to sink into the silt or weed without dragging the rig into it and giving bad presentation. When fishing in deep silt the exactly the same is true and the sinker/bead can be moved even further away from the lead to avoid the rig being dragged deep under the silt. When fishing over dense weed we would opt for a Chod rig in place of others and would move the Sinker/Bead u away from the lead by several feet, usually as far from the lead as the weed that you intend to fish over is deep. As with any lead arrangement Fish safety is paramount, so please note that the bore bead should only be lightly pushed onto the end of the sinker furthest from the lead so that in the case of a snap off the bore bead can easily pop off the sinker and the rig is free to come off the leader/mainline.
